Attorney Heather L. Nelson

Heather L. Nelson grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies and Political Science, along with a Certificate in Criminal Justice. While attending school, she interned for the Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation, where she was exposed to many high profile cases and investigations. During her time at UW– Madison, Heather had the opportunity to travel abroad and study business in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Heather graduated with her Juris Doctorate degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. While attending William Mitchell, she studied international law and criminal justice in London, England. She also worked as a Certified Student Attorney for the Ramsey County Public Defender’s office, where she represented indigent clients at arraignments and bond hearings. In her spare time, Heather volunteered at the William Mitchell Self-Help Clinic, where she helped clients clear their past criminal records and adjust their child support obligations.  In her second year at William Mitchell, she was selected to represent William Mitchell College of Law in the American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition. In the summer of that year, she also interned for a Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge and gained an invaluable understanding of courtroom procedures and how to present a persuasive argument.

Heather passed the Wisconsin Bar Exam, Multi-State Bar Exam, and was admitted to the State Bar of Wisconsin. Since her admission to the Bar, Heather has primarily focused her practice on family law and criminal law matters in Southeastern Wisconsin.

As an experienced litigator in family law matters, she has handled a wide variety of divorce cases, including but not limited to, cases involving complex custody and placement disputes, inheritances, real estate, retirement benefits, and businesses. She also can handle your paternity, post-judgment, and child support needs.

Heather also has an extensive background in traffic and criminal matters. She is an effective negotiator and aggressively advocates on behalf of her client.

Heather is a diligent and compassionate attorney who provides special attention to each case. She understands that the needs of each client are unique. She listens to her client’s individual concerns and explains the law and legal arguments so they can make an informed decision. This results in practical, cost-effective solutions.
